DeMarcus Cousins, popularly known as “Boogie” in the NBA, is infamous on the court for his short temper. Fans may be surprised to learn that off the court, Cousins is known for his generous work in charity.
In 2011, DeMarcus began hosting the annual “Santa Cuz” during the holiday season to boost the spirits of underprivileged families in Sacramento and in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama. Each year, Cousins gives 100 kids in both locations a $200 gift certificate to use for a Christmas shopping spree. Afterwards, the kids get to take pictures with their favorite NBA star.
Cousins was born to a single mother who struggled to make ends meet, especially during Christmas time. This adversity inspired him to make it big and give back to his community in any way possible. The annual “Santa Cuz” event is only one of the many ways he works to better the lives of his fans and his community.
In 2013, Cousins donated $1 million to poor families in Sacramento after signing a contract extension with the Kings. The Kings management urged Cousins to announce his donation during a press conference. With a questionable reputation at the time, Cousins did not want to appear to be flaunting his wealth.
On the court Cousins’ behavior may seem a bit erratic, but away from the game he is one of the most generous and warm-hearted people in the NBA. He truly wears his heart on his sleeve.
