Tattoos are mainstream now- everyone’s got them. Younger generations are more accepting of visible body art while older generations tend to disagree. Image is paramount when representing a company. Your appearance showcases and your company’s beliefs and values.
According to a recent Pew Research Center study, 40% of people between the ages of 18-29 have tattoos, moreover, 72% of people say that they hide their body art in the workplace.
Depending on the company and field, the answers could vary on whether it is acceptable or not for tattoos to be visible. If you are working and interacting with people face-to-face daily, they should be covered. However, if you are working behind a desk, body art policies may be more lenient. Always check the company’s policy and inspect the work environment. Look to see if other employees are covering up their tattoos.
The hiring process is a different story. There’s a time and place for everything; an interview is not the time to flaunt that awesome tattoo you got back in high school. To make an impression on human resources, you want to look professional. They are judging how well you represent their company; consider hiding tattoos, or even incorporating a watch and jewelry- you want to look your best! It is better to look more professional if you do not know the company’s policy yet. Do not take the chance!
Ten years ago, showing tattoos in the workplace was taboo. More and more companies are changing their policies and allowing more than they would have in past. Corporations are coming to the realization that more than half the population has at least one tattoo, so it really doesn’t make sense to discriminate against body art.
