Tips on Securing an Internship

Securing an internship is one of the most important steps on your way to becoming a young, successful professional. The ability to work under and alongside specialists in your field is invaluable, and plays a vital role in your college career as you enter young adulthood. The options for internships that relate to public relations are extensive, here are a few tips to get you started in the right direction!

Check for Internal Opportunities Before You Search for External Internships

Whichever college or university that you are attending likely has multiple offices that relate to your field. Schools often have at least one combined marketing and public relations office, if not they may even have multiple departments that function in similar capacities that align with your objectives and needs.

Schools will often offer internships to students that have little to no experience at all in their field! Don’t forget, colleges are educational institutions, their primary goal is to shape us into more knowledgeable and effective professionals. If you are unsure about where to seek out these opportunities, just ask one of your professors, they will likely be more than happy to steer you in the right direction, and your ambition will likely score you a couple extra brownie points!

Bigger Isn’t Necessarily Better

Just because a large, reputable company is offering internship opportunities, doesn’t necessarily mean that this is the best option for you. Sure, it is nice to put a flashy and noteworthy name on your resume, but an internship is mainly there to teach you the skills that you need and will hopefully apply to your life and career upon graduation. Being a gopher tasked with fetching donuts and coffee may not be the best use of your time!

Seeking out a smaller firm or company that is offering positions that require you to think critically and be directly involved in their day-to-day operations is a great way to grow your skill set and gain experience that will prepare you to take on even greater duties and responsibilities in the future.

Think Outside the Box

Is there a company you’ve always dreamed of working for, but haven’t seen them promoting any openings? Contact them anyway!

Many places will take on interns whether they are actively seeking them or not. Contacting a company who hasn’t advertised any openings will show initiative and a drive that many students fail to show at this level.

Local businesses can also be a good way to find an unconventional internship. Building relationships with pillars of your community, while earning a couple credits and learning vital skills, can help you on your way to creating a strong network that you will undoubtedly utilize in your future!
